Belle H. Hsu, Of Counsel

Belle Hsu is an experienced employment law attorney who has worked both in large law firms and in-house.

As an employment law attorney and human resources executive, Belle has represented the interests of individuals, small businesses, retail and hospitality, medical and information technology, and Fortune 500 corporations in a variety of matters.

Belle has both legal and practical experience with all aspects of employment, including recruiting, hiring, leaves of absence, discipline, and termination.  In addition, she specializes in drafting internal business/corporate documents, including employee agreements, employee handbooks, company procedures, and separation agreements.  Belle has also delivered harassment prevention, wage and hour, and other seminars to all aspects of the workforce and has conducted over 100 independent investigations into harassment and/or discrimination claims.  She frequently conducts company self-audits in a concerted effort to be in compliance and avoid wage and hour class actions and substantial attorney’s fee remedies available in Private Attorney General’s Act (PAGA) actions.  In addition, Belle is experienced in responding to government agency charges from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), and many other state or local agencies.  On high-stakes business transactions, she is well-versed in working on labor and employment due diligence and contract drafting on various types of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals.

Belle’s prior work experience includes serving as Director of Human Resources & Associate General Counsel for a medical device manufacturer and distributor, as well as in-house employment counsel for a global oil company.  In addition, she has served as international employment law counsel for a global medical services provider.  She started her law career at Littler Mendelson P.C. and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

Belle received her J.D. from the UCLA School of Law and has a B.A. in English from Pomona College in Claremont, California.  During law school, she was a judicial extern for the Honorable John G. Davies (famous for presiding over the Rodney King civil rights case), and also served as a criminal law intern at the Criminal Division of the California Attorney General’s Office where she primarily worked on juvenile criminal matters.

Belle is admitted to the State Bar of California, United States District Court of the Central District of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Belle has been active with the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles County (“APABA”), having served as its President in 2006 after a long stint on its Board of Directors.  She served on the Barristers Section of the Elimination of Bias Subcommittee for the Los Angeles County Bar Association.  She has also volunteered for various legal aid organizations, including Bet Tzedek, Covenant House, Disability Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, East West Players (Los Angeles’ premier Asian-American theater group), and the Disability Rights Legal Center. She has been a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel (“ACC”), the Torrance Chamber of Commerce, and Professionals in Human Resources Association (“PIHRA”).

In addition to her legal skills and experience, Belle is also fluent in Taiwanese and conversant in Mandarin Chinese.
